Art on the Mountain
I have had the great honour of painting on our iconic Table Mountain over the last week, and I will continue to paint on a few more days through the end of November, as part of the Art on the Mountain initiative organised by Cape Town Fynbos artist Hermien van der Merwe.
In Hermien’s words, “This initiative, at its heart, is about celebrating Cape Town, fynbos, and Table Mountain through art. By gathering artists on the mountain, we’re creating a vibrant space that invites people to connect in a fresh and memorable way. Visitors can look forward to an inspiring mix of creativity and collaboration, with Table Mountain itself as both canvas and backdrop. We will be showcasing Cape Town as a hub of creativity.”
I was lucky enough to be on the mountain on the very first day, and we were interviewed by a local reporter! My experience was exciting - no sooner had we arrived at the top of the mountain via Cable Car, than the mist and clouds started to roll in. I knew I had to paint quick (which I need to do anyway!), but this time time truly was of the essence. I was painting the view looking down over the Twelve Apostles, and by the time I was finished, there was literally no mountain to see at all!
The painting has started, and so has the enveloping of cloud!
Rushing to get the final marks down before the mountains disappear!
