Salon 1: Working with Galleries
First Salon!
You may be wondering why you're part of this what's app group. I've had an idea for a while - I may have mentioned it to some of you - where I'd like to bring us together at my apartment to recreate the style of the Salons of the 1800s through to Gertrude Stein in Paris in the 1920s. I think each one of us is an amazing person with fascinating ideas and thoughts. My hope is to create a space where we can share our ideas and inspire each other. We are all focusing on our art, but there are so many other disciplines it would be exciting to explore together (philosophy, literature, psychology...) and that will no doubt help us all as we continue to discover what we truly care about, and the art we want to create.
From Jo Allen 28 Jan 2018:
The great Joan Didion: “I write entirely to find out what I'm thinking, what I'm looking at, what I see and what it means. What I want and what I fear”.

[28/01/2018, 21:08:25] Sarah Hardy: Fully believe that with our thoughts we create our world, and thoughts are nurtured, nourished and brought to life by sparks in, of and from other fields - writing, music, philosophy, theatre, the natural world - whatever fuels our mind, body and spirit - whatever challenges and resonates with our values. What constitutes the human spirit and our collective consciousness? Art is life, our life is art - passion with responsibility.

[04/02/2018, 09:37:16] Denise Melvin: A take away from last nights salon is that we dont exress ourselves through art but that we serve it. Also interesting discussion on becoming a pro, how we have so little info about this, importance of finding a mentor who can reveal the secret rules of the game, etc. Would love to see more of this kind of discussion. ...also so that we can avoid the mistakes so many early stage artists make!

Theme I loved the depth we reached in the conversation about the role of galleries and how we as artists engage with galleries. We also talked about how art today is so often a financial investment made by people who don't necessarily care about the art. We talked about the warehouses in Switzerland that the BBC podcast mentioned that have 3 football fields of artworks that no one ever sees.... How can art play any role in society of no one sees it...
[04/02/2018, 21:20:29] Joanna Miller: We also talked about what responsibility (if any) we have as artists who are acquiring such advanced skills in our art making....
DOCUMENTARY: Blurred Lines: Inside the Art World 2017 is talking all about what we've been talking about.....
[06/02/2018, 22:46:24] Joanna Miller: Being a professional artist, galleries, art fairs, the contemporary art world today.
